This widely used sampler is a heavy duty version of the standard split tube sampler. The Acker Drill Company developed and patented this split tube sampler, which is better adapted to severe service under hard driving than the standard type. Coarse threads in the sampler head speeds assembly and disassembly. As with all other Acker tube style samplers, the shoe is heat treated to withstand exceptional abuse. The standard length of the sample is 18", with 24" as an option. A ball check feature prevents washing out sample on withdrawal from the hole. The shoe is recessed to accommodate a trap valve and spring or basket retainer. A liner is optional to accommodate successive sampling. Note the step in the tube design, which prevents bowing when being driven, and the heavy duty threads in the head section. This sampler is recommended for standard penetration tests, as well as, other tests with heavier hammers.
